Summer in New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds
2010 promises new beginnings. While we here at Cobblestone can’t help you stick to your New Year’s resolutions (unless of course you made one to enjoy more Cobblestone this year), we will see a project we launched way way back in 2008 come to fruition. While some may call this the Year of the Tiger, we at Cobblestone would like to call it the Year of the Pinot Noir.
Our first vintage from our New Zealand vineyard on the Te Muna Terrace in Martinborough will be bottled in a few months. With Cobblestone’s inaugural Pinot resting in barrel, our award-winning NZ winemaker Outi Jakovirta has been hard at work crafting some of the best Pinot the world has to offer.
The 2008 Pinot Noir from Julicher Estate (also on the Te Muna Terrace and where Cobblestone Pinot is made), has just earned the Champion Wine of the Show Trophy at the 2009 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. The prestigious annual competition saw 1,655 entries this year, and this is the first time a Martinborough Pinot has taken the top prize in the event’s nearly 30-year history.
Chair of judges Steve Smith, Master of Wine, stated: "The Julicher Pinot Noir 2008 is a true example of New Zealand Pinot Noir at its best, featuring a deep brooding black cherry color, dusty plum and autumn forests on the nose. This is the first time the Pinot Noir pioneers of Martinborough have claimed the top trophy, and it is truly deserved."
This is Outi’s second #1 wine. The 2006 Julicher Estate Pinot, the first wine she made for the winery, won Champion Wine of the Show at the 2007 NZ International Wine Competition.
