Cobblestone 2004 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon receives 91 points in Wine Enthusiast!

"At the age of about five years, this Cab is quite soft and dry, and the fruit is just beginning to show development. It’s changing from fresh blackberries and cherries to dried fruits and currants, with a dusty quality. The oak brings in sweetly welcome notes. Should glide into maturity through 2012."

Cobblestone Cabernet

2004 Cobblestone Cabernet Sauvignon is now available.  The 2004 Cabernet is made entirely from the fruit of our family estate vineyard high atop Napa Valley’s Atlas Peak. While the 2004 vintage delivered smaller yields than expected for many Napa Valley growers, we found that the fruit showed exceptional character and concentration.

The ‘04 is a blend of our two Cabernet Sauvignon clones along with 6% Cabernet Franc, which further enhances the wine’s complexity. The well-balanced wine was aged for 18 months in French oak followed by extended bottle aging, providing approachability on release with additional long-term cellaring potential.

Wine Enthusiast reviews the 2004 Cobblestone Cabernet Sauvignon:

“…Ultra-ripe, jammy berry-cherry and chocolate flavors and firm tannins…The balance seems to be there.  If you don’t want to cellar it, enjoy with barbecue.”

COBBLESTONE ADDS NEW ZEALAND ESTATE TO VINEYARD PORTFOLIO

Cobblestone's Te Muna Terrace vineyard

Cobblestone's Te Muna Terrace vineyard

The New Zealand property, planted entirely to Pinot Noir, is situated on the Te Muna Terrace, an elevated and more recently developed section of the renowned Pinot Noir village of Martinborough. From the low-yielding vineyard, Cobblestone plans to produce around 500 cases annually of world-class Pinot Noir.

Cobblestone believes Martinborough, and more specifically the Te Muna Terrace, delivers the perfect balance of Burgundian structure and complexity with the brightness of New World fruit. Appropriately, ‘Te Muna’ is Maori for ‘secret’ or ‘special place.’

Cobblestone ’06 Chardonnay scores 89 points in the July issue of Wine Enthusiast

“A good follow up to last year’s bottling, Cobblestone’s ’06 Chard hails from the Arroyo Seco, known for its crisp, ripe, elegant white wines. It brims with pineapple, peach, tangerine, mineral, buttered toast and vanilla spice flavors.”

The review appears with our label on page 60 and is also repeated in the Buying Guide.

October, 2007
Appellation America writer Alan Goldfarb profiles the Atlas Peak appellation in his October 12th article The Three Facets of Atlas Peak:
“Unlike some appellations in the Napa Valley, which experience regular amounts of coastal fog in the evenings, much of the Atlas Peak American Viticultural Area (AVA) has relatively fog-free evenings. This, despite the fact that its location suggests that Atlas Peak should experience the same temperature inversions. In fact, it can be about 10-15 degrees cooler during the day on Atlas Peak as compared to the floor below; with cooler nights and warmer days on the east side of the area than the west side.

High elevation and ridge-top terrain contribute to this aberration, as does the fact that only narrow canyons connect Atlas Peak to the Napa Valley. Though most of the appellation lies well above the fog line, it reaps the cooling benefits of the fog that creeps in from San Pablo Bay, often blanketing the valley and its lower elevations.

All 11,400 acres of the appellation rise above sea level at elevations from 760 to 2,663 feet.”

Inaugural release of Cobblestone Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Rose (2006).  This wine instantly became a favorite at tastings over the summer!

This Cabernet Rose offers just a touch of sweetness balanced with a crisp, dry finish. Look for strawberries and cream amidst a blast of bright fruit on the palate. An absolute must for summertime barbecues, magic with sausage and practically anything off the grill, and a delightful aperitif for warm afternoons. Serve lightly chilled.

More raves from Wine Enthusiast Magazine!

2003 Cobblestone Cabernet Sauvignon: 90 POINTS "The grapes are from Atlas Peak. This may be the ripest Cab I've ever had from that mountain. It's rich and deep in blackberry, cherry, blueberry and chocolate pie filling, and is very soft and luscious. Complex now, it should hold for five to seven years." - Steve Heimoff

2005 Cobblestone Chardonnay: 90 POINTS "Heavy layer of wood spice and butterscotchy char, but the underlying fruit is powerful enough to support it. The pineapple tart, peach custard and cinnamon flavors are crisp and juicy with acidity." - Steve Heimoff

The San Jose Mercury News
from Daniel: Cabernet's day has arrived at Atlas Peak by Laurie Daniel
"Cobblestone began in Monterey County's Arroyo Seco area and takes its name from the
river stones found throughout the vineyards there. More recently, its owners acquired property
in Atlas Peak, where they grow red Bordeaux varieties. The 2003 Cobblestone Cabernet
Sauvignon ($39) offers plenty of black cherry fruit accented by roasted coffee and an
interesting minerality. It's a firmly structured wine but could be drunk now. The 2003
Cobblestone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($69) is bigger and denser, and the oak is more
obvious. The wine is still very young but shows great promise."

Gayot names Cobblestone Cabernet its Wine of the Week! "This 2002 Cab explodes with flavors and delivers a serious punch all the way to the finish. We’d love to try it after at least five years, but even as it is, we can tell you this one’s a keeper—should you be able to find it that is. These red grapes are harvested from the Atlas Peak appellation in the Napa Valley, and from there, the juice is aged in a combination of barrels for 22 months. The result is a dark ruby, tannic and complex beverage. It fills your nostrils with black fruit and minty mocha scents. The robust vino delivers dark berry, pomegranate and vanilla flavor in layers. More flavors are revealed in the finish like clove, and smoky oak. You’ll want to bring this one to the table with a serious red meat offering from the grill."Rating: 16.5 - Excellent

Big scores from Wine Enthusiast!

2004 Cobblestone Chardonnay: "A fresh, clean wine with lively acidity. This Chard has lifted tangerine and pineapple flavors…Drink now." 88 POINTS

Napa Valley’s Bounty Hunter raves about Cobblestone Chardonnay! ”This is one of those producers that came out of left field and left our tasting panel searching for adjectives. What a showing! Deftly balancing the ripe, tropical fruit flavors of California Chard with the acidity and zip of cool-climate French whites, it’s a telling example of why Monterey is so revered for this varietal. Spicy pear and citrus fruits get a serious boost from acidity running through the mid-palate. It has a very subtle oak influence…never assaulting the palate with toothpicks. A miniscule 450 cases were made. We highly recommend you give this a whirl before the press makes it a moot point.” Bounty Hunter – Spring/Summer 2005
